Storage Perivale Health and Safety Policy
Storage Perivale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, customers, contractors and visitors. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with storage facilities and removal activities, including the handling, packing, loading, unloading and transportation of goods.
We recognise our duty to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and to promote a culture where safety is a shared responsibility. This policy applies to all operations carried out under the Storage Perivale name, whether on our premises, at customer locations or on the road.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
Storage Perivale is committed to:
Identifying, assessing and managing health and safety risks arising from our storage and removal activities. Providing and maintaining safe premises, vehicles, plant, equipment and systems of work. Ensuring the safe handling, movement and storage of goods, including heavy, fragile or bulky items. Providing employees with suitable information, instruction, training and supervision. Consulting with employees on health and safety matters and encouraging feedback. Preventing accidents, work-related ill health and damage to property. Reviewing and continually improving our health and safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety within Storage Perivale. This includes setting objectives, allocating resources and ensuring that effective procedures are in place. Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy within their areas of control and for leading by example.
Management responsibilities include:
Carrying out and updating risk assessments for storage facilities, vehicles and removal activities. Ensuring that employees are competent for the tasks they perform, especially manual handling and driving duties. Providing appropriate personal protective equipment where required and ensuring it is used correctly. Making sure that equipment is regularly inspected, serviced and maintained to safe standards. Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must cooperate with Storage Perivale in implementing this policy and supporting safe working practices.
Employee responsibilities include:
Following safety procedures, safe systems of work and instructions provided by managers or supervisors. Using equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly and reporting any defects immediately. Practising safe manual handling techniques, including team lifting and the use of handling aids where appropriate. Keeping work areas, storage zones and vehicle loading areas tidy and free from avoidable hazards. Reporting all accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions promptly so that corrective action can be taken.
Safe Storage and Handling Practices
Storage Perivale operates storage facilities and removal services that involve the regular movement of furniture, boxes and other items. To manage these risks, we adopt the following safe practices:
Carrying out pre-move and pre-storage assessments to identify access issues, weight considerations and any special handling requirements. Using appropriate lifting and handling equipment, such as trolleys, dollies and straps, to minimise manual handling risks. Planning loading and unloading operations to maintain stability, secure loads properly and avoid overloading vehicles. Ensuring that heavy items are stored at appropriate heights and that walkways and emergency exits remain clear. Implementing clear signage, floor markings and safe stacking limits in storage and loading areas.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
For removal and transport operations, Storage Perivale recognises the importance of safe driving and vehicle control. We aim to ensure that journeys are planned and carried out with the safety of drivers, passengers and other road users in mind.
We will:
Ensure that drivers are properly licensed, trained and familiar with the vehicles they operate. Carry out regular checks and scheduled maintenance on all vehicles used for storage and removal services. Require drivers to complete basic vehicle safety checks before starting a journey. Promote safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits, safe parking and secure loading. Manage working hours and rest breaks in line with legal requirements and good practice to reduce fatigue-related risks.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Perivale maintains fire safety and emergency arrangements appropriate to its storage and operational sites. All employees and regular contractors are made aware of these arrangements and their responsibilities.
Key measures include:
Maintaining suitable fire detection and alarm systems and testing them regularly. Keeping fire exits, escape routes and assembly points clearly marked and unobstructed. Providing fire extinguishers and other equipment suitable for the risks present and inspecting them periodically. Conducting fire and emergency evacuation drills to ensure that staff understand procedures. Ensuring that all visitors and customers are directed to follow staff instructions in the event of an emergency.
Training, Information and Supervision
Storage Perivale provides appropriate health and safety training to employees according to their roles. This includes, where relevant, induction training, manual handling, working at height, vehicle safety and the safe use of tools and equipment.
We ensure that:
Employees receive clear information about risks associated with their work and the measures in place to control them. New and temporary staff are supervised until they demonstrate competence in required tasks. Refresher training is provided where necessary, especially when procedures, equipment or legislation change. Records of health and safety training are maintained and reviewed regularly.
Contractors, Customers and Visitors
Storage Perivale takes reasonable steps to ensure that contractors working on our premises are competent and follow safe systems of work. Contractors are required to comply with our health and safety requirements and to communicate any additional risks arising from their activities.
Customers and visitors using our storage facilities or present during removal activities are expected to follow safety instructions given by our staff and to avoid entering restricted areas. Where customers assist in lifting or moving goods, our staff will advise on safe methods and may restrict participation where risks cannot be adequately controlled.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Storage Perivale monitors health and safety performance through inspections, incident reporting and feedback from employees and customers. We use this information to identify trends, areas for improvement and priorities for action.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment, premises or applicable legislation. Updated versions are communicated to employees and made available to customers and other interested parties upon request.
By implementing this policy and working together, Storage Perivale aims to maintain a safe and professional storage and removal service that protects people, property and the environment.
